Apple to top November sales in Japan
Dec 9, 1999
IT ISN'T YET OFFICIAL, but Apple Computer (Japan) is all set to again be proclaimed the top computer seller in Japan for November 1999, based on the previous weeks' data compiled by Japanese market research unit BCN.

On average, save for the two remaining days of the month, Apple's market share for November in Japan amounted to 26.4%, improving on October's figure of 24.2%.

Mac sales in Japan (Nov 15-21) — iBooks all the way
Dec 2, 1999
iBooks topped computer sales in Japan for the second week running as Apple's products retained 10 of the top 15 places, including the top 4 spots, in the consolidated rankings of computer sales in Japan for the period Nov 15-21, according to Japanese market research unit BCN. Apple's market share eased slightly to 27.4% for the third week of November.
Here's an extract from the report, kindly translated by Heeday Danjo of University of Southern California:
Apple Computer continues to be on a roll. Out of the 15 models in this week's ranking, 10 were from Apple. This is despite availability not being stable, so Apple's popularity may be more than that of last year's iMac.
Other models in the ranking are the $1000 PC's from NEC and Japan IBM. With the increasing demand toward family-oriented personal computers, these models are appealing to family users with their affordable price tags.
It is already the end of November and the Year-End sale season is just around the corner. With expectations that this year's season will be the largest ever, retail stores are busy with preparations.
From the results thus far, it seems almost a given that Apple will take the top spot again for computer sales in Japan for November.

Mac sales in Japan (Nov 15-21)
Nov 24, 1999
Mac Sales in Japan for the period Nov 15-21 — Just a day after yesterday's posting, Japanese market research unit BCN released its rankings of the top-selling desktop computers in Japan for the week of Nov 15-21.
It's another topsy-turvy week of musical chairs, as the iMac DV SE slipped to 2nd place for the first time in 6 weeks, and the 350MHz Blueberry iMac moved up to take the top spot.
Lime, which was riding high on the sales charts just the previous week at #6, disappeared abruptly from the top 10, while the remaining iMacs literally traded positions back-to-front. All in, it appears once again that flavor management of inventory has had quite an impact on the rankings of iMacs thus far. How the iMacs will do by this weekend is anybody's guess.
Rankings for notebook computers were unavailable.

Mac sales in Japan (Nov 8-14) — iBook top-selling computer in Japan
Nov 29, 1999
iBooks topped computer sales in Japan as Apple's products took 10 of the top 15 places in the consolidated rankings of computer sales in Japan for the period Nov 8-14, according to Japanese market research unit BCN.
Leading sales for the period were the two iBooks with all of Apple's 7 new iMacs in tow. The PowerBook G3 333MHz just made the cut to stay in the top 15. All in, Apple improved on the previous week's market share of 25.1%, amassing 27.8% of market share for the second week of November.
Here is an extract from the report, kindly translated by Heeday Danjo of University of Southern California (I'm also grateful to Donald Lavelle from Hiroshima for his help in the translation):
The 2 iBook models held the top and 2nd positions, and with 10 models in the top 15, Apple's reign at top of the market share race continues. Apple's market share has increased since the 2nd week of October in terms of both units and revenue, and now is at 33.9% in desktops and 20.2% in notebooks in unit numbers, thanks to the availability of the iBooks.
The fact that some retail shops have resumed taking orders has also contributed to this trend. Apple Computer (Japan) states that "the time it takes from the intent to purchase to product delivery is becoming shorter in general," so it seems that the availability situation is slowly recovering.

Mac sales in Japan (Nov 8-14) — iMac DV SE, iBook still #1
Nov 23, 1999
Mac Sales in Japan for the period Nov 8-14 — Japanese market research unit BCN has just released its latest rankings of the top-selling desktop and notebook computers in Japan for the week Nov 8-14.
In almost routine fashion, all 7 iMacs appeared once again among the top 10 desktop computers sold in Japan during that week. The iMac DV SE chalked up its 5th consecutive week as the hottest-selling personal computer in Japan so far.
As for the jostling for positions among the remaining iMac flavors witnessed in recent weeks, unless Lime has suddenly become as hot as wasabe, the figures may indicate that consumers are picking up whatever iMac flavors are available, rather than wait.
Still, Blueberry seems to be the way to go for most. Before the new iMacs arrived, the 333MHz blueberry model was the best-selling iMac, having stayed consistently among the top 3 computers sold in Japan in the previous few months.
And now, 9 weeks after debuting at #1 in mid-September, the Blueberry iBook is still Japan's favorite notebook computer with the Tangerine in 2nd place.
