One Country, Two Systems — The Apple Store (Hongkong) Opens
Oct 28, 1999
THE APPLE STORE (HongKong) has opened — just slightly ahead of schedule. Looking very much like its sister store which opened two days earlier in Singapore, the Hongkong online store offers virtually the full complement of Apple products, with most deliveries promised within 14 days of orders, except for PowerMac G4s which will take 30 days. Don't get fooled by the prices though, because they're in HK$.
On a side note — apparently, warning stickers will be stuck to every PowerMac G4 sold that say you can't take one with you into the Mainland. Now that really gives new meaning to the 1997 Handover phrase "One Country, Two Systems".
Apple Store Singapore Opens — Right On Time
Oct 26, 1999
WHAT WAS THOUGHT by everyone to be a minor hiccup in the launch of the first Apple Store in South Asia turned out not to be, evidently, as Christina Goh, director of Asia Apple Store told CNET Singapore: "The Apple Store was open in Singapore as scheduled at 10am on Tuesday, October 26. The call center also opened at 10am."
Well, if anyone had been paying attention to Apple's full-page ad this morning, Apple Singapore did in fact state CLEARLY the time that the store would open. It says so right there on the clock in the trash-can. :-)
Asia Apple Stores to open in Singapore and Hongkong
Oct 20, 1999
NOT ONE, BUT TWO Asia Apple Stores will be launched next week, in Singapore and Hongkong respectively. This was revealed by Apple Singapore this evening.
To be accessible from Tuesday at www.asiaapplestore.com as well as coming directly under the Apple top-level domain, Apple Store Singapore [www.apple.com/singaporestore] will be launched next Tuesday, Oct 26 as earlier reported.
Following that, Apple Store Hongkong [URI unconfirmed, www.apple.com/hongkongstore?] will open its doors next Thursday, Oct 28. For a start, the Singapore branch will only serve the domestic market. Probably, the Hongkong store will, too. (No G4s will ship across to China, that's for sure.)
Only Apple products — for now
The company has confirmed that orders for all Apple-branded product lines including software will be accepted from Opening Day. Apple plans to include third-party products like printers and other peripherals shortly. Delivery for iMacs, iBooks, and Powerbooks will be made within 14 days of orders, and for PowerMac G4s (except for the infamous Ultimate) and the Apple Cinema Display, within 21 days. Credit card payments by either Visa or Mastercard will be accepted. All prices at the time of order will be unconditionally honored.
The new iMacs
The new iMacs and their refined colors are visually stunning! (Didn't expect shiny plastic could look this good.) The iMac DV Special Edition was absent, as were the PowerMac G4s. A couple of iBooks were available, too but I was too mesmerized by the iMacs to take notice. Maybe another day. We caught A Bug's Life on DVD but it's not likely to be offered here. Pangea's Bugdom is though. Harman-Kardon's iSub for the iMac will be available in Singapore mid-November.
A quick preview of the still-under-construction Apple Store website followed. Prices shown are before GST. The Asia Apple Store will offer:
- Fully built-to-order configurations of any model
- Free delivery to your doorstep
- Secure credit card payment facilities
- 24-hour online access
Freebies
AppleClub members (which basically includes any right-minded computer user) will receive a free Microtek Slimscan C3 scanner for a purchase of any Macintosh from the Apple Store before Dec 1 1999.
Win a trip to MacWorld
In conjunction with the launch of the Asia Apple Store, you stand a chance of winning a free trip to MacWorld San Francisco 2000 just by answering 3 simple questions. Look out for the flyers you'll be receiving very shortly in the mail for details.
One More Thing...
And now, for the best news of all: Steve Jobs will be flying in to Singapore next Tuesday to personally officiate the launch of the first Apple Store in Asia.
Gotcha.
